A highlight reel of our sustainability reporting and strategic achievements throughout last year.

We’re proud to unveil our 2024 Integrated Report, which takes a look back at the progress we’ve made and the Purpose that drives us forward. This report captures how we’re Raising the Good in Food – for our people, communities, animals, and the planet – while advancing our Vision to be the most sustainable protein company on Earth.

At Maple Leaf Foods, we believe that doing the right thing isn’t just good business, but it’s the heart of who we are. This year’s report highlights how we continue to turn that belief into action, through our five pillars.

Making better food

We’re honoured to offer food Canadians can feel good about. Our flagship brands, Schneiders® and Maple Leaf®, hold the #1 and #2 spots in Packaged Meats in Canada, respectively. Mina® has earned the top spot as the #1 Halal brand in fresh poultry in Canada, and Greenfield Natural Meat Co.® is the #1 brand in Sustainable Packaged Meats in Canada. In 2024, we launched 50 new products across our brands, including Schneiders Breakfast Sandwiches and Breakfast Bites. The new Schneiders® breakfast products are part of our broader innovation strategy as a consumer-packaged goods-driven business to create new, sustainably produced products that meet the evolving needs and preferences of consumers.

Taking better care of our people

Our people make everything that we do here possible. In 2024, we strengthened workplace standards through 11 social compliance audits and took the next steps in advancing an enhanced program to ensure safe, respectful, and supportive environments across our operations. We maintained a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of 0.37 – a 94% improvement since 2012.

We also expanded mental health supports, deepened our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts, and introduced LinkedIn Learning for all salaried Team Members, empowering lifelong learning and continuous growth.

Taking better care of our communities

Through the Maple Leaf Centre for Food Security, we’ve committed $13.3 million to 40 initiatives over the last eight years, addressing food insecurity across Canada. In 2024 alone, we donated $4 million in food across Canada and the U.S.

Our Raise the Good in the Neighbourhood program gives salaried Team Members two days of paid time off per year to make a difference in their community by volunteering with the cause of their choice. In 2024, Team Members volunteered in more than 33 communities, supporting local food banks, healthcare institutions, community centres, and newcomer services.

Taking better care of our animals

We’re committed to the humane treatment of animals. We provided 100% of our owned sow spaces with open sow housing according to the NFACC Code of Practice and Canadian Pork Excellence PigCARE standards. We’ve also introduced environmental enrichment for pigs and broiler chickens, and we’ve invested in humane processing technologies. All of our chicken plants now use Controlled Atmosphere Stunning, more humane processing method.

Taking better care of our planet

We’ve been carbon neutral since 2019 and are working toward an ambitious goal: reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, against a 2018 base year. By the end of 2024, we achieved a 5.1% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 15.6% reduction in Scope 3 emissions intensity, since the 2018 base year.

We’ve also been utilizing regenerative agriculture practices, teaming up with Nutrien for the fourth year in a row and increasing our efforts from 19,000 to more than 250,000 acres. We continue to embed sustainability within our organization, supporting projects like the Lake Winnipeg Basin Water Stewardship, covering 30,000 acres across four farms to help with water management. Additionally, we’ve reached a 94.1% landfill diversion rate across our company, with three of our facilities  achieving 100% landfill diversion.
