David Smales

David Smales joined Maple Leaf Foods in January 2024 as Chief Financial Officer. In this role, he oversees all corporate and business finance activities, including financial reporting, treasury, tax, internal audit and investor relations. 

David has over 30 years of experience in diverse finance roles, as well as general management, strategy, and mergers and acquisitions. Prior to Maple Leaf Foods, David was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Aecon Group Inc. for almost 15 years. He also served as Chief Financial Officer of Catalyst Paper Corporation and held a number of senior financial positions at Novar plc in the UK focused on international operations. David started his finance career with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he gained 10 years of experience in both audit and transaction services.

David is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and has a BA (Honours) degree from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in England.
