Livestock evacuation reports false

TORONTO, Feb. 10 /CNW/ - Maple Leaf Foods today issued the following statement
to correct the false allegations concerning the evacuation of livestock from
its Winnipeg, Manitoba facility. A newspaper story in the Winnipeg Sun, and
carried by media outlets across the country, reported that the company
evacuated livestock, but not employees, following a threatening phone call to
the Winnipeg plant.

"Allegations that Maple Leaf evacuated livestock and not employees are
ridiculous and completely false. The safety of our employees is always our
primary concern.''

On January 22 and January 29, 1999, the Winnipeg plant did receive anonymous
phone calls of a threatening nature. In both instances, local authorities were
contacted. Working with authorities, steps were taken to ensure the safety of
employees. Based on input from authorities no evacuation of any kind was deemed
necessary or implemented. The Winnipeg Sun is printing a retraction.
