Landmark Feeds Celebrates 50 Years in Operation

Landmark, Manitoba— Western Canada’s leading supplier of feed and nutrition
services to the livestock and poultry industries today commemorated 50 years in
business with a celebration in Landmark, Manitoba. From its start as a small feed
mill in Landmark, Manitoba in 1954, Landmark Feeds has grown to the largest feed
company in Western Canada, with 10 state-of-the art manufacturing facilities servicing
the swine, dairy and poultry industries.

“Landmark Feeds has come a long way since it began as a small, single-site
operation in rural Manitoba 50 years ago,” said company president Ron
Arnason. “Today we manufacture more than 750,000 tonnes of feed annually
and develop nutrition programs that improve animal health and performance for
all species of livestock and poultry, serving the growing needs of agricultural
markets in the heart of livestock regions in Western Canada.”

In 1974, Landmark Feeds expanded beyond its original feed operation with the
acquisition of a feed mill in Rosenort, Manitoba. Since then, it has invested
heavily in securing its leadership position through acquisitions and building
new infrastructure with eight other mills in Manitoba and Alberta, while maintaining
its head office in Landmark. In 2003, Landmark Feeds commissioned its newest
start-of-the-art feed mill in Souris, Manitoba, integrating the latest food
safety controls that support the company’s commitment to leadership in
quality assurance..

In 1982, Landmark Feeds launched the Elite Swine Management Program, a unique
hog management system that led to the establishment of Elite Swine Inc., which
is now the largest hog production company in Canada. The Landmark Group merged
with Maple Leaf Foods Inc. in 1999. Today, Landmark Feeds and Elite Swine employ
over 500 people and function as independent operating companies within the Maple
Leaf organization.

“Landmark Feeds is well positioned to be a major player in the livestock
and poultry industries throughout the 21st century,” said Arnason. “Our
commitment to producing the highest quality feed products and animal nutrition
programs and delivering excellent service to our customers, ensures we’ll
continue to create jobs and prosperity in rural communities throughout Manitoba
and Western Canada.”

Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TSE:MFI) is a leading Canadian food processing company
committed to delivering quality food products to consumers around the world.
The company employs more than 23,000 people at its operations across Canada,
and in the United States, Europe and Asia, and had sales of $5.0 billion in
2003.
