Burlington Environmental Situation Under Control

BURLINGTON, Ontario - An ammonia leak was discovered and brought under control this morning at the Maple Leaf Burlington pork processing plant on Appleby Line. All approximately 650 employees, as well as the employees of a neighbouring business, were safely and quickly evacuated.

Current activity is focused on monitoring of in-plant conditions and employees are going home for the day.

No one at the plant was injured. Ammonia is used in the cooling systems for the plant. The source was confirmed as a valve and is now contained. Maple Leaf is reviewing the root cause of the incident and will continue to work with all appropriate authorities to gain a full understanding of the situation.

"We are thankful for the timely response of the fire and police departments and the Ministry of Environment that assisted in minimizing the impact of this situation," said Linda Smith, a spokesperson for the company.
