Maple Leaf Natural Selections and Schneiders Country Naturals
Increasingly consumers are looking for products made with simpler, natural ingredients. In
response, we developed Maple Leaf Natural Selections and Schneiders Country Naturals, which
offers a full line of premium quality, cured meats made with all natural ingredients.
We spent four years developing these products and they are very different from our
conventional products. We removed the following synthetically produced preservatives and
ingredients:
- sodium nitrite;
- sodium phosphate;
- sodium diacetate;
- potassium lactate; and
- sodium erythorbate.
We added natural ingredients, such as:
- lemon juice;
- sea salt;
- vinegar; and
- vegetable-based ingredients, such as cultured celery extract.
Cultured celery extract is cultured to produce nitrite through a process similar to adding
bacterial culture to milk to produce yogurt. In combination with vinegar, lemon juice and sea
salt, cultured celery extract is a natural preservative that plays an important role in food safety.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) must approve all food package labels.
In order to change a product label, the CFIA must review and approve copy and label design for each individual product.
For consumers who
are interested in further information about our Maple Leaf Natural Selections and Schneiders
Country Naturals products, we have received approval to amend the front and back panel of
our labels deli, sliced meats, bacon and wiener product labels to state the following:
Front panel:
No Preservatives Added*
*Beyond those naturally occurring preservatives and nitrites in the ingredients.
Back panel:
Sea Salt and Cultured Celery Extract Contain Naturally Occurring Nitrites.
The new labels of our products are either in stores now or will be transitioning to their new label shortly. For more information on our labels, please follow this link.
